Verde Independent Cottonwood, Arizona Wednesday, June 08, 2005 Alton M. ''Dusty'' Patterson, 88, of Cottonwood, died June 4, 2005. He was born July 19, 1916, in Rexford, Kan. He attended school in Pratt, Kan. After the onset on World War II, Mr. Patterson joined the Army Air Corps on October 25, 1941. He acquired the name ''Dusty'' by his service buddies as he was from the dusty state of Kansas. The 94th Bomb Group was formed at Davis-Monthan Field and was assigned to the 8th Air Force Comand in 1942. He was with 332 Bomb Squadron throughout his service career and attained the rank of master sergeant. He served in England, Europe and Africa. Most of his overseas duty was served at Bury St. Edmunds, England, as a Crew Chief on B17 Flying Fortress planes. He received several medals including EAMETO Medal, American Defense Medal, ETO Medal, WWII Victory Medal and the Presidential Citation with one Oak Leaf Cluster. One citation was for action in Germany Aug. 17, 1943, and the other was for action in Germany Jan. 11, 1944. He was discharged in 1945. Mr. Patterson was a retired certified welder with American Steel Corporation in Etiwanda, California. He previously had worked as an airplane and auto mechanic. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was an avid golfer who shared that love with his family. He also enjoyed family history. Mr. Patterson is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sylvia Patterson; a son, Rocky Glenn Patterson of Nuevo, Calif.; two daughters, Judy Patterson of Cornville and Christy Patterson of Cottonwood; Donna Welch of Macksville, Kan., Edna Heflin of Cunningham, Kan., and Jeane Pippin of Cornville; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Ada Patterson; brothers, Devon, DeLayne, Glenn and Dewayne Patterson; sisters, LaFaun, LaVenia, Ilamae, Bonita and Evelyn. A funeral service will be held today, June 8, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 2 p.m. An hour of visitation at the church will precede the service. Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. VFW Post #7400 will provide military honors. Donations in his memory may be made to the Parkinsons Disease Foundation, Gift Processing Center, P.O.
