Gene Hutchins, 91, passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at his daughter's home in Prescott, Ariz. He was born June 12, 1918, in Castlerock, Idaho, to Hugh and Maple Perry Hutchins. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Perry Allen Hutchins and Mar Dale Hutchins. The family moved to the Los Angeles area when he was young and he was raised there. When he was 19 he served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Northern States Mission.

Gene worked for many years as a tool designer in aircraft plants all around the country. In 1951, he went to Dallas, Texas, on a job and met Barbara Wilson. They were married June 9, 1951, in Barbara's Christian Church in Fort Worth. On May 25, 1953, they were sealed for time and eternity in the Church of Jesus Christ, Mesa, Ariz., temple. Their first child, Mark Allen, was born in Alamorgdo, N.M., in 1953, Juliana was born in 1955 in Baltimore, Md., and William Gene was born in Palo Alto, Calif., in 1956.

Gene's main passion was riding motorcycles and he found Prescott to be an ideal place to pursue his hobby and still commute to Los Angeles where his business was. The family moved to Prescott in June 1971. However, in 1974, he had a bad accident on his cycle, which left him crippled. He could walk with a cane, so traveling took over as his great pleasure. He also learned to fly and got his license when he as 65. He soon learned he was too old for flying so he and Barbara bought a motor home and traveled all over the U.S., Canada and Mexico. They also took several world trips and toured Europe, Tibet and any place that appealed to them. Gene was well-known around the plaza, riding in his electric scooter with their little black dog, Daisy, in the basket.

Gene was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life and his main enjoyment was teaching the gospel. He had an entertaining way to make the gospel come to life.

Gene is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara; and his three children, Mark (Debra), Juliana (Ken) Kyer and William Gene. He left sisters Ruth Killian, Barbara Jones, Colleen (Ernie) Vandeweghe, and two brothers, Melvin (LoRene) Hutchins and Robert Hutchins, all from the Los Angeles area; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He also has a son, Kim (Marlene) Russell, from a former marriage.

A memorial service for Gene will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, 2009, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sandretto Street in Prescott. All his and Barbara's friends are welcome and invited to attend. Family and friends will gather at 10 a.m. in Relief Society room.
