Backstrom, age 77, who passed away June 29, in Congress, Ariz., was held Monday (July 3) at 11 a.m. at the Good Shepherd of The Desert Catholic Mission in Congress. Marty was born Oct. 26, 1928 in Helena, Mont., to Leonard Backstrom and Anne Kinsella Backstrom. He married Ellen Reinoehl June 20, 1952 in Coeur d Alene, Idaho. He joined the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA) in 1948 and competed in bareback riding and team roping. As a young man he rode bareback horses and then later turned to team roping. He last competed in team roping in the 1990s. When Winston initiated its rodeo scoreboard program in 1971, Marty became one of the original scoreboard operators. Later he started his own scoreboard business, Frontier Scoreboards, until he sold the business in 2000. Marty also worked as a carpenter and could fix just about anything. He moved to Wickenburg, Ariz., from Missoula, Mont., in 1970. He had worked for stock contractors Oral Zumwalt and Bud Lake in the 1950s and early 1960s and had also worked for Big Sky, Kessler, Kohrs, Flying U Rodeo Companies. He is survived by his daughter Sunni Deb of Congress, Ariz.; and sisters Jeanne Tanner (Jack) of Butte, Mont., and Frances Oswald (Bill) of Great Falls, Mont. He was preceded in death by brothers Chris, Joe, Jim, and Mike; sisters Ann and Rosemary; and wife Ellen Reinoehl Backstrom. Family suggests memorial contributions in Marty's memory be made to Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, 101 Pro Rodeo Dr. Colorado Springs, CO 89019. There will also be a memorial service and interment held Aug. 26 in Ovando, Mont. Arrangements under the direction of Wickenburg Funeral Home. |
