Eva A. (Brewer) Berkshire

Last week, July 17-21, saw the passing of husband and wife Edgar and Eva Berkshire within days of one another.

Eva A. (Brewer) Berkshire was born August 2, 1916 in Galion, Ohio, to Budd and Edith Brewer. She entered Sun Health Hospice in Sun City on July 13 and died there on July 21. She and her husband J. Edgar had been residents of My Father's Retirement Ranch since March of 2003.

Eva attended schools in the Mansfield, Ohio, area and Ashland College in Ohio where she met her future husband. They married in 1936. During their 69 years of marriage they lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana, as well as Arizona.

Eva had been teaching in a one-room country school in Ohio's two-year plan the year they were married. She completed her degree at Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind., during the 1950s and taught third grade in Tyner, Ind.

Eva was preceded in death by her brother Burke Brewer and her sister Kathryn Mowry, and recently her husband Edgar.

J. Edgar Berkshire was born near Masontown, Pa., August 11, 1913 to Harry and Eva Berkshire. He entered Sun Health Hospice on July 11 where he died July 17.

Edgar attended schools in Masontown and taught high school in the area after his graduation from Ashland College in Ohio. He also served two small rural churches nearby.

At Ashland College, Edgar met Eva Brewer whom he married in 1936. From Pennsylvania, they moved to Ohio, then Indiana, where they served Brethren Churches.

Following his retirement from the ministry, he worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor in the South Bend, Ind., area.

Edgar was preceded in death by a brother W. Clayton, and is survived by two brothers H. Francis of Scottsdale and Charles of Florida. All four brothers were ordained ministers in the Brethren Church. His wife Eva recently followed him in death.

Edgar and Eva are survived by daughters Carol (Curtis) Arnett of Wickenburg and Lois Belcher of Honolulu; a son Loren (Patricia) Berkshire of Keller, Texas. Also surviving are grandchildren Jonathan Arnett, Kelly (Mark) Howard, and Ryan Berkshire; great-grandchildren Nicole Belcher and Tim and Olivia Howard, as well as nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the faith group or charity of choice. A service was held Sunday, July 23 at Green Acres Mortuary in Scottsdale with Rev. James Longstreet officiating.
