The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ August 30, 2006, p. A11 Rudolph (Rudy) Frederick Wendel of Jackson, Minn., passed away Monday, July 31 at the Jackson Good Samaritan Center in Jackson, Minn. Rudy was born on Dec. 26, 1917 in Jackson County, Minn., to Charley and Emma (Garms) Wendel. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Rost Township. He graduated from Okabena High School in Okabena, Minn., in 1935. He entered the U.S. Signal Corps attached to the Air Corps in September of 1941. As a staff sergeant, he was assigned to administer the civilian lookout posts for Riverside County, Calif. In 1945 he was assigned as a crew chief for P38s in Panama. He was discharged from the Air Corps in December 1945. On March 2, 1945, he was united in marriage to Rosemary Cummins in Preston, Idaho, with special permission from the Governor of Idaho. From 1946 to 1955 he operated an auto tune-up shop in Burbank, Calif. In 1955 Rudy and Rosemary moved to Lakefield, Minn., where until 1979 he was a hog buyer for Hygrade Food Products in Lakefield. He served as a member of the Lakefield City Council. As a member of the council, he served as co-chairman for planning and fundraising for the Lakefield Okabena Swimming Pool. He was a member and a Commander of the Lakefield American Legion. He was a member of the VFW and a long-time member of the Jackson Golf Club in Jackson, Minn. From 1965 to 1986 Rudy was the owner of the world-renowned Rudy's State Line Supper Club located 12 miles south of Lakefield on Highway 86. Rudy and Rosemary retired in 1986 and moved to Jackson in 1996. Rudy and Rosemary spent all the winters from 1986 to 2004 visiting their friends and family in Wickenburg, Ariz. Rudy is survived by his wife Rosemary, daughter Marilu (Bill) Rix of Wickenburg, son Mike (Kathie) Wendel of Sartell, Minn., grandchildren Michelle and Nathan Wendel of Sartell, Minn., Chris (Kathy) Rix of Elk Grove, Calif., and Andy Rix of Wickenburg, Ariz. A celebration of Rudy's life was held for over 100 friends and family on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at the AmericInn in Jackson, Minn. Private family services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Rost Township. The Hansen Funeral Home in Lakefield was in charge of the arrangements. |
