Clinton graduated from Sturgis' St. Martins Academy in 1944. In 1945, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific on a destroyer escort as quartermaster until his honorable discharge in 1952 at San Diego. He traveled the local roping and South Dakota Rodeo Association circuits for decades, and his horse followed him to Arizona to spend many winters roping there. He was a past director of the South Dakota Stock Growers Association. He was also a member of the Sturgis VFW.

He was a community leader, highly respected by all and was always interested in giving a helping hand to the young ranchers that were just starting out.

Clinton and Nunny spent 20 winters in Wickenburg, Ariz., where they have many special friends.
