Rosemary Wendel passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at the Jackson Medical Center in Jackson, Minn. Rosemary was born on June 22, 1923 in Burlington Junction, Mo., to Laurence and Lillian Cummins.

She was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Church. She graduated from San Bernardino High School in San Bernardino, Calif. She belonged to Epsilon Alpha Gamma, which sponsored all musical activities on campus. She played string bass viola for the Glendale Symphony Orchestra. She was executive secretary to the President of Lockheed Aircraft.

In 1943, as a card-carrying member of the Hollywood Canteen, she met Rudolph W. Wendel of Okabena, Minn., on a blind date, and on March 2, 1945 they were united in marriage in Preston, Idaho, with special permission from the Governor of Idaho.

After Rudy was discharged from the Air Corps stationed in Panama, they lived in Burbank, Calif., until 1955 when they moved to Lakefield, Minn.

While living in Lakefield, Rosemary was a great homemaker and later a grandmother who was known as “the Cookie Grandma.” She loved to play bridge and was a part of a unique bridge club for 45 years. According to bridge lore in southern Minnesota, she had the reputation for being one of the best and most patient players. In fact, on the day she became ill, she was playing marathon bridge.

While in Lakefield she was a member of the VFW Hanson Ward Auxiliary 4743. She also belonged to Theta Chi Epsilon Sorority.

From 1965 to 1986, Rudy and Rosemary were the owners of the world-renowned Rudy's State Line Club 12 miles south of Lakefield on Highway 86. Rudy and Rosemary retired in 1986 and moved to Jackson, Minn., in 1996.

Rosemary enjoyed watching sports on television with Rudy. They especially enjoyed the Twins, Vikings and in the past couple of years No. 89 on the Notre Dame football team (No. 89, L.J. Carlson is their son Michael Wendel's godson).

Rosemary is survived by a sister Betty Lou Cummins of Sylmar, Calif., her daughter Marilu (Bill) Rix of Wickenburg, Ariz., her son Mike (Kathie) Wendel of Sartell, Minn., grandchildren Michelle and Nathan Wendel of Sartell, Minn., and Chris (Kathy) Rix of Elk Grove, Calif., and Andy Rix of Wickenburg, Ariz.
