The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Saturday, September 05, 2009 Dec. 29, 1926 - Aug. 29, 2009 Preston Shivers, 82, died peacefully in his sleep at Las Fuentes Care Center following recent surgery at Yavapai Regional Medical Center. Pres was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the only child of Preston F. Shivers Sr. and Katherine Mudey Shivers. He is survived by a stepbrother, Dennis Hill of South Dakota, and a stepsister, Nancy Hill De Pauw of Illinois. Also surviving is close friend of more than 50 years Jack Smithler of Prescott. Pres attended schools in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., and Laurel, Del., and was a 1944 graduate of Carson Long Military Academy, New Bloomfield, Pa. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Germany at the close of WWII and was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict. In civilian life Pres was employed as a Philco Corp. technical representative in Germany, later with American Airlines, based in Chicago and Los Angeles. His technical skills and attention to detail led to employment in the Los Angeles area in the electronics component industry as sales order analyst, sales engineer, and contracts administrator. He retired in 1991 and moved to Green Valley, Ariz. Pres joined longtime friend Jack Smithler, sharing seasonal homes in Green Valley, Flagstaff and Prescott. They chose Prescott for their permanent residence in 2002. Cremation and additional arrangements were provided by Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, Prescott. A graveside service with military honors is planned for interment of cremains in St. Mary's Cemetery, Skaneateles, N.Y. To be announced will be an informal gathering of treasured friends and neighbors in honor of Mr. Shivers' 82 years of service, caring, and ready good humor. Information provided by survivors.
