Lytal Laurel Kinder

Lytal Laurel Kinder, 97, much-loved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, died May 31, 2008, in Phoenix, Ariz., at his daughter's home surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 12, 1911, in Moreland, Ark., to Ulysses S. Grant "Dude" Kinder and Matilda Elizabeth "Ivy" Mackey Kinder.

Lytal was the third child born to Dude and Ivy but was the first child to survive infancy. He was followed by brothers Ellis (Hazel), Elmer (Delsie), J.L., Ulysses "Junior" and sister Bermel (Ernest).

Kinder had a great interest in all things mechanical. He loved his dogs Beano, Bosco and Daisy. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers and friends throughout his life.

On March 16, 1931, Lytal married Irene Juanita Pitts in Moreland, Ark. They moved to Prescott in 1934, where he worked for the City of Prescott Water Dept. Later he worked for Hankins Auto Mart and eventually opened his own business, Kinder's Mechanical Service. Lytal joined the Navy on Oct. 24, 1943, served as Chief Machinist's Mate, USRN. Const. Batt., USNCTC, WimVA., NavRep Base, San Diego, Calif. USS ARD 26 and was stationed in Guam. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 30, 1945.

One week after returning home, he purchased a home in Prescott that is still owned by the family. In 1950 their only child "Little Irene" was born. Lytal and Irene divorced in 1963. Lytal married Zeldene Jarvis in 1963. She had two children, Sharon and Russell Wilhelm. On Oct. 9, 1971, his daughter Irene married Jay W. McReynolds. His first grandchild Elaine was born on Sept. 11, 1972, in Phoenix, Ariz., and his second grandchild Thomas was born on Dec. 12, 1976, in Oakland, Calif. Lytal sold his business in the '70s and worked for E-Z Transmix for many years. In his later years, Lytal lived with his good friends Terry and Kathy Vallely. In 2006, Lytal came to live with his daughter in Phoenix, Ariz.

He is survived by his daughter Irene (Jay) McReynolds; granddaughter Elaine (Daniel) Bigelow; grandson Thomas (Angela) McReynolds; and his great-grandchildren Carson, Anthony, Addison, Paige, Parker and Thomas. He will always be remembered for his numerous acts of kindness, quick wit, love of baseball, and strong work ethic.

Viewing will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2008, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1001 Ruth St., Prescott, Ariz. Internment service will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 1051 Willow Creek Road, Prescott, Ariz. In lieu of flowers, tell each member of your family how much you truly love them.
