The White Mountain Independent Show Low, Arizona 09/22/2009 Zina Scott Porter, 105, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at her son's home in Pinetop-Lakeside. She was born June 13, 1904, in Oaxaca, Mexico, to George Washington Scott and Phoebe Earston Johnson. She was very creative, despite the fact that her sight was greatly impaired. She frequently composed poetry and often directing dramatic presentations for her church including road shows, ward conference dramas and youth theatrical productions. She wrote short stories and won several Relief Society story contests. Her life was filled with family and church service. She served for years as a Relief Society instructor and scout leader and loved to learn about the lives of the many former Cub Scouts and guide patrol scouts whose lives she had touched. In later years, she and her husband, Wilmer served a full-time mission for her church in Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wilmer W. Porter of Heber; sisters Mary Ellen Coons of Mesa, Nora Johnson of Phoenix; daughters Betty Dawn and Paige in childhood; son W. Ted Porter of Mesa; and daughters-in-law Dora F. Porter and Sylvia Andersen Porter. She is survived by her best friend and sister, Pearl Bailey of Glendale; daughter-in-law Fern Fuller Porter of Mesa (wife of W. Ted Porter); grandchildren Christy Porter, Paul Porter, Penny Smith, Sherry Dangerfield, Brandi Sonderegger and Benjamin Porter; and 11 great-grandchildren of the late W. Ted Porter family. She is also survived by C. Vard Porter of Chula Vista, Calif., husband of Diane Larson; grandchildren Brooke Heilesen, Heidi Santos, Christopher Porter and Devin Porter; and seven great-grandchildren of the C. Vard Porter family. Also survived by son G. Terris Porter of Pinetop-Lakeside (husband of the late Dora Flake), Sylvia Andersen and Judith Anne Sterling; grandchildren Glen T. Porter, Heather M. Porter, Celeste Y. Porter, Nicholas S. Porter and Elizabeth Porter; and six great-grandchildren of the G. Terris Porter family. She is also survived by son Kay S. Porter (husband of RoseAnn Phelps); grandchildren Gina Porter, Erika Porter, Jeffrey Porter, Blaine Porter; and five great-grandchildren of the Kay S. Porter family. This is a happy occasion for Zina - at 105 years old she had long anticipated her reunion with her beloved husband, daughters and other family members who had gone before. She lived a full and happy life and often referred to her funeral as her "going away party." She always considered Heber to be her beloved home and will be laid to rest there. A viewing will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9-10 a.m. at the Heber LDS Chapel, followed by funeral services at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the Heber Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Owens Mortuary of Show Low. See Also: Find A Grave |
