Gold Mine Watchman Murdered

His face battered nearly beyond recognition, the lifeless body of Manuel Hernandez, 68 years old, a watchman at a gold mine for years, was found lying crumpled in the center of the road by his employers near Nogales last week.

The cabin of the aged watchman shows evidence of a terrific struggle. Part of the cabin was demolished by flames but parts of the floor and walls that remain show that there was a battle before Hernandez was overcome.

It is the belief of the sheriff's office that Hernandez was left for dead at his cabin by his assailants and that he later regained consciousness and was able to struggle a short distance down the road before he succumbed. Hernandez' body was badly scorched by the flames that devoured part of the cabin.
