Buddy Knight Is Air Crash Victim

Vernon (Buddy) Knight, Jr., 25-year old son of Mrs. Lena Knight, lost his life last Saturday an airplane crash at sea off the coast of Japan. According to a telegram from General, Pate, commandant of the Marine Corps, Buddy was on a low level navigation mission 24 miles east of Ashiya Air Force Base, Japan, when the plane crashed into the water. The body was recovered late the same day. It will be sent to this country for funeral services, which were pending as The SUN went to press.

A First Lieutenant in the Marine Corps, Buddy had been transferred from the United States to Iwakima, Japan, March 22. He entered the Marines as a private in 1953 and took his boot training in San Diego.

He later entered officer training school, graduated as a Second Lieutenant and was subsequently promoted to First Lieutenant. His specialized training was in jet planes.

Born in Bronxville, N. Y., May 12, 1932, he came with his parents to Wickenburg when he was three months old. He attended Elementary School here, attended the Cate School at Carpenteria, Calif., and graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell, N. M. He also was a student at Columbia University, New York, for three years prior to entering military service.

He was married to Joanne Kayser of Pensacola, Fla., and they had one child, Robert Vernon Knight, now one and a half years old.

Buddy's father died in 1951.

Surviving, in addition to the wife and son in Florida and the mother in Wickenburg, are the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Jennie Hill of Wickenburg, and the, paternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Alfred Knight of Phoenix, and one sister, Mrs. Robert Brown of San Rafael, Calif.

Body of Buddy Knight Now Enroute To U.S.

Mrs. Lena Knight has been informed by the Marine Corps that the body of her son, Vernon (Buddy) Knight, Jr., is now enroute by ship to San Francisco.

While no detailed plans regarding funeral services can be made until the body arrives, it is planned to conduct the burial in the Naval Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla.

Buddy received his training at Pensacola. His widow and infant son resided there. He lost his life when his plane crashed into the sea off the coast of Japan June 1.
