The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Saturday, September 19, 2009 Margaret G. Allen, known by all her many friends and acquaintances as "Marge," died peacefully on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Good Samaritan Center in Prescott Valley, Ariz. Marge was born in Whittier, Iowa, on Aug. 9, 1914, to Earl and Celia Moore. She is survived by her sons, Gerald B. Smith (Mary Alice) of Crested Butte, Colo., Paul G. Smith (Jacque) of Winthrop, Wash., and Rodney L. Smith (Connie Brakken-Smith) of Denver Colo.; grandchildren Eric and Jeffrey of Illinois, Dirk and Dylan of Washington State, Emily Smith of Charlottesville, Va., and Lauren Smith of Ann Arbor, Mich.; great-grandchildren Colin, Grant, Tatum, Ellie, Eloise, Cameron and Kendra; niece Claudia Peterson; and nephews Mark and Hal Frees of California. Marge was preceded in death by her loving and caring husband Ken in 1987; sister Ann Frees; and her brother Gordon E. Moore. Active in many church and civic organizations throughout her 95 years of life, she most recently volunteered at Yavapai Regional Medical Center, Lady Lioness Club and Prescott Chamber of Commerce. Marge lived and served in Prescott for almost 30 years after retiring from business life in Denver, Colo., with her husband, Ken Allen. She was also a Life Member and past officer of the Elks Ladies Auxiliary; Prescott Newcomers Club and Member and Greeter of the Prescott United Methodist Church. Nominated on her 90th birthday by the Daily Courier as "The Queen of Prescott" based on her many outstanding contributions to the Prescott-area community, she was recognized by many as an inspiration to those of all ages and backgrounds. She was also recently recognized by a Phoenix local television news story made in Prescott. In 2003, Marge was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for "dedicated humanitarian services" through the Lions Club International as an active member of the local Noon Lioness Club. Marge traveled extensively into her senior years with recent trips to Portugal, England and France, but her most frequent travels over the last 30 years were to Denver, Colo., where she celebrated her 90th birthday with complete family and nearby friends. She also traveled often to watch her beloved Diamondbacks play in Phoenix. A celebration of Marge's life will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at the Prescott United Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be made in Marge's name to the Yavapai Exceptional Industries, 436 N. Washington Ave., Prescott, AZ 86301. Marge's cremated remains will be inurned at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Denver, Colo., beside her husband. The Wakelin Family Funeral Homes assisted the family with final arrangements.
