Rose Mary Martinez-Barnes "Rosie" was born December 7, 1951, in Los Angeles, California, and passed away June 4, 2004, in Phoenix, Arizona.

Rose Mary Martinez-Barnes passed away at John C. Lincoln Hospital after an extended illness. She was the daughter of Olivia S. MARTINEZ and the Late Jesus B. MARTINEZ of Lordsburg, NM.

Rose enjoyed a successful career in education for over twenty years. She received her BA in elementary education from Western New Mexico University in 1979. She also received, her MA at Arizona State University in 1995, specializing in multi-cultural studies. Her educational honors included Sigma Delta Pi Honor Society, Cardinal Key National Honor Sorority, Named Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities: Named to Who's Who Outstanding American Women, Western New Mexico University, Silver City, New Mexico; Nominated for Bilingual Teacher of the year, AABE, Spring 1989. Her teaching years were spent in the Phoenix metro area concentrating on Bilingual education. She was teaching English as a Second Language at Glendale Community College, as well as second grade at Melvin E. Sine Elementary School, at the time of her passing.

Rose enjoyed hiking, traveling, reading and writing children's stories.

She was an active member of Bethany Presbyterian Church where she served in various capacities, including outreach programs to Mexico. She was committed to youth and children's ministries as well.

Rose is survived by her husband, James H. BARNES of Phoenix, Ariz., her mother, Olivia MARTINEZ, of Lordsburg, N.M. Siblings include three brothers and five sisters; Jesus MARTINEZ, Jr. of Diamond Bar, Calif., Juanita ALVAREZ of Bellflower, Calif.; Rachel MARTINEZ of Albuquerque, N.M., Ruth MARQUEZ, of Albuquerque, N.M., Alice McCANS of Truth or Consequences, N.M., Isaac MARTINEZ of Lordsburg, N.M., Pedro Martinez, of Albuquerque, N.M., Neomi Parra of Lordsburg, N.M.

Rosie will be greatly missed and exponentially appreciated. Visitation at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary, 7924 N. 59th Ave.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 7702 N. 35th Ave. An additional funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Iglesia de Jesucristo in Lordsburg, NM.
