Harold (Mort) L. Mortimer, 82, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Jan. 3, 2004. He was born Jan. 7, 1921 in Lynn, Mass. He is survived by his wife Edna F.: daughters Suzanne Bolton (Richard) and Alicia Youngs (Richard); grandchildren Robert Bolton, Alaina Youngs, Alison Youngs, Charles Bolton and Andrew Bolton. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

He was a career military man who joined the U. S. Army in 1939, initially serving in Panama. He served in World War II with the famed “Merrill’s Marauders” unit in Burma. He was a civilian for three years following the war before re-enlisting in 1948. From 1948 until his retirement in 1963 he served in Korea, Japan and Germany. He retired at Fort Carson, Colorado with the rank of Sergeant.

After his retirement from active army, he accepted a position as a civilian advisor for the 91st Division, Sixth Army reserves at Fort Baker, Calif. He also went into active reserves at that time, eventually serving as First Sergeant for eight years, following by Sergeant Major before retiring again after 14 years.

After 1963, he resided in San Francisco until 1965. He moved with his family to San Anselmo and lived there until 1979. He and his wife Edna then moved to Albuquerque for their retirement years. In 1995 they relocated to Wickenburg.

In his retirement years, he enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and traveling. He visited his children and grandchildren often. He was also an enthusiastic participant in veteran’s reunions, especially the annual Merrills’ Marauders reunion.
