The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ January 21, 2004, p. B10 Barbara S. Conroy, a former resident of Wickenburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in St. Louis, Mo. She was 90 years old. Mrs. Conroy was born in Pony, Mont. on Feb. 17, 1913, to Lee S. and Mary Ellen (O'Brien) Tower. After attending grade school and high school in Dillon, she received her degree in Education from the University of Montana-Western in 1931. After graduation, she taught in both Twin Bridges and Whitefish. In 1937, she married William F. (Bill) Conroy, an electrical engineer with the Great Northern Railway. Their daughter, Carol Ann, was born in 1942 in Waltham, Mass. Between 1942 and 1945, Mrs. Conroy raised their daughter while her husband served with the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. After World War II, the family lived in Wenatchee, Wash. before moving to Anaconda, Mt. in 1951, where Bill Conroy took a job as Superintendent and later General Manager of the Butte, Anaconda & Pacific Railway. While living in Anaconda, Mrs. Conroy was a substitute teacher and was active in numerous community organizations including the Girl Scouts, the Catholic community and school system, and the Anaconda Women's Club. Barbara and Bill played golf regularly at the Anaconda Country Club, were avid bridge players, and enjoyed spending time outdoors at their cabin at Georgetown Lake. Later in life, they began spending winters in La Paz, Mexico and then in Wickenburg where they continued to relish their time on the golf course and at the bridge table. She also took pleasure in needlework, enamel and copper crafts, and silver jewelry making. After her husband died in 1992, Mrs. Conroy lived in Wickenburg year-round. She moved to St. Louis in 1997 to be closer to her daughter. Mrs. Conroy is survived by Carol Ann and her husband Karl Barnickol, by her grandchildren Karl (Sara) and Laura (Bob Wilhelm) Barnickol, her sister Polly Bohnert, and her sister-in-law Dorothy Long. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her granddaughter Mary Beth, her sister Mary Lee and brother William C. Tower.
