The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona June 4, 2004 . William T. Randall, 72, a resident of Sedona, Arizona, died May 28, 2004. Dr. RANDALL was an educational leader in Phoenix and Scottsdale from 1973-88. Dr. RANDALL began his education career as a teacher and principal with the Shoreline Public Schools in Seattle. He completed his doctorate in Educational Administration at Arizona State University in 1969, and in 1970 he became the assistant superintendent in the Washington Elementary School District. Dr. RANDALL left the Washington district in 1973 to become superintendent of the Scottsdale Unified School District, a position he held until 1980. Following three years as a consultant with EDGE, Inc, of Tempe, he became superintendent of the Creighton Elementary District. During this time, he also served as education advisor to Arizona Gov. Bruce BABBITT. Dr. RANDALL left Arizona in 1988 to serve as Colorado's Commissioner of Education, a position he held during a decade of educational reform. Dr. RANDALL received numerous honors, including being named Arizona Art Educator of the Year in 1977, Arizona Superintendent of the Year in 1988, chair of the National Assessment Governing Board of the National Assessment of Educational Progress 1994-97, and and president of the Council of Chief State School Officers in 1995. Dr. RANDALL believed strongly that every child should be given the tools to succeed, especially in the essential skills of literacy and civility. Dr. RANDALL traveled extensively throughout the world, but he was especially drawn to his beloved West, which he explored with his wife Barbara. A hiker and adventurer, Dr. Randall loved the mysteries and promises of the outdoors. In 2001, he and Barbara took three weeks to retrace the Lewis and Clark Trail. Their observations were posted on a special web site sponsored by the McREL Laboratory to commemorate the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial. His gifts of generosity of spirit and love will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Dr. RANDALL is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters Julie, of Torrance, CA; Linda, of San Diego, CA; Mary, of Scottsdale, AZ; five granddaughters, a great-granddaughter, and a sister, Rosalie. There was a celebration of Dr. Randall's life on Thursday, June 10, 2004 at the Chaparral Christian Church, 6451 E. Shea Blvd., Scottsdale, AZ. See Also: ASU Alumni |
