Lorraine Smith Layman, 93, of Hendersonville, N.C., died Wednesday, June 23, 2004.

A native of Sterling, Mich., she was a daughter of the late John and Sophia Smith and was a former resident of Brevard, N.C., Wickenburg, Ariz., Flushing, Mich., and had lived in Hendersonville for the last six years. She was the wife of the late Oscar Layman, who died in 1987. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Elgin and Leigh Smith.

Mrs. Layman retired from Buick Engineering in 1969 and was a lifelong member of the Episcopal faith. She was a member of the Girls Friendly Society and while residing in Southern Pines, was a member of the Sandhills Children's Center and the Emanuel Episcopal Church Thrift Shop.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Layman of Lincoln, Calif., Sarah Thomas of San Francisco, Calif., and Joan McLean and her husband, Larry, of Weaverville, Calif.; a sister, Arlene Teutsch of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and two grandchildren, Patrick McLean and Elizabeth Brick.

A memorial service will be held in Hendersonville. Burial will be in Flushing, Mich., at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or to a Hospice Children's Program.
