George H. Lomayesva

George H. Lomayesva, 79, passed away suddenly on June 20, 2009 while visiting family in Parker, Arizona.

George, the eldest of ten children, was born in Sonora, California to Dwight Moody Lomayesva and Mary Burnett Lomayesva.

He is of Hopi and Miwok descent and an enrolled member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes.

As a young man, George joined the military and gave 24 years of service to his country. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army. Later he enlisted in the Air Force until he retired in 1975 after 22 years. George was stationed in Paris, France where he met and married his wife, Christina, of 51 years. He was stationed at Reese AFB Lubbock, Texas; Oslo, Norway; Los Angeles Air Force Station (LAAFS); Tan Son Nhut AB, Vietnam; and Davis Monthan AFB Tucson, Arizona.

Upon his military retirement, George became a civil servant and worked for the Indian Health Service (IHS), Tucson, Arizona for 20 years. He traveled throughout the IHS community as an instructor in management services, worked with the Community Health Representative (CHR) program and served as a Division Director.

George is survived by his wife, Christina Mollen Lomayesva; four children, Howard Rennie King (Tae Ok); Lyska Welbourne (Tennyson); Gary Lomayesva (Sharon) and Paul Lomayesva (Sherri) and his grandchildren, Shalako, Amber, Natalie, Daniel, Rebecca, Tim and Sara. He is also survived by his siblings, Delores Harjo, Dwight Lomayesva Jr, Frank Lomayesva, Bill Lomayesva, Juanita Nelson, Gloria Esquerra, Rosemary Velarde and Rosemarie Miller.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marigold Conlan. George; a husband, father, grandfather and friend will be missed by all his family and friends.

He will be laid to rest, with military honors, in Parker, Arizona. Visitation will be Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Poston Community Baptist Church, 26685 Mohave Road, Poston, Arizona. Funeral Services will be Friday, June 26, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. also at the Poston Baptist Church. In addition, a Memorial Service celebrating George's life will be held in Tucson on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Ann's Chapel and Ranch (private residence), 5800 E. Santa Fee, Tucson, Arizona.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association and/or the American Diabetes Association in George's memory.
