James H. Sult

James H. Sult, 87, died at his home in Winkelman on Monday, March 5, 2007. He was burn July 23, 1919 in Rural Retreat, Virginia.

He was retired from the Virginia National Guard, the US Infantry and from iron reinforcing and ammunition manufacturing.

Serving in the US Army from 1941-1945, Jim fought mainly in the European-African Theater of the Second World War with much honor and bravery. He received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Good Conduct medals while in the First Special Service Force of the Army (The Devil's Brigade). Then, as a distinguished veteran, he returned to the Redford Army Ammunition Plant to finish up 21 years as a worker there in Virginia. Jim was a lifetime member of the First Special Service Forces Association (The Devil's Brigade).

Survivors include two daughters, Mary L. (George) Foster Sr. and Shirley Ann Smith, both of Roanoke, Virginia; a sister, Alice Marie Boone of Speedwell, Virginia; a nephew, John Boone, also of Speedwell; grandchildren, Tammy Houchin, George C. Foster, Rhonda Foster, Gretchen Foster and Maggie Foster; and great-grandchildren, Brandi and Brandon.

He was preceded in death by two sons, James William and Edward Lee Sult.

Services for Mr. Sult were held Monday, March 12, at Griffith Mortuary by Pastor Palmer of the Fellowship Baptist Church. Interment with military honors by the Ray High School MJROTC was at Dudleyville Cemetery in Dudleyville.
