James L. Nelson went home to the Lord on Aug. 10, 2004 after a courageous and dignified battle with cancer.

Born in Basic Township, Nev., now known as Henderson, on March 12, 1943, Jim spent most of his life in Wickenburg. He graduated as an honor student from Wickenburg High School in 1961 and attended Arizona State University, where he majored in history and was a member of the ROTC.

Jim joined the U. S. Army during the Cuban Crisis and served with the 82 Airborne Division. He was the highest in his graduating class from the Small Missile Systems Repair School. His tour of duty with the military included participation in the Santa Domingo, Revolution in 1964/1965.

Following service to his beloved country, Jim returned to Wickenburg with lovely wife June. After a short period of time, he joined the Maricopa County Sheriff’s office (MCSO), where he served until his retirement in 1987 at the rank of sergeant.

He received commendations for his acts as a public servant to the residents of Maricopa County and the Wickenburg area.

Jim was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Lodge No. 5 and served on the FOP State Board as a conductor for several years.

He was the state champion for the MCSO Pistol Team in 1978/1979 in the Sharpshooters Competition and placed in many other divisions. Jim was a Life Member of the National Rifleman Association, Gold Prospectors Association of America, Lost Dutchman’s Mining Association, and a member of the Aircraft Owners Pilots Association.

After retiring from the Sherriff’s Office, Jim devoted his attention to the Grapevine Springs Ranch, a family-owned ranch as descendants of Jesus Madril.

Jim enjoyed a variety of sports and activities that included hunting, fishing, gold prospecting, shopping, ranching, and flying. One of his favorites was packing the medical supplies and participating in the annual Desert Caballeros Ride. Jim loved telling stories that taught lessons of history and life. As a great teacher and leader, he significantly impacted the lives of those he touched.

Jim was a strong supporter and prayed daily for those serving and protecting our country – including missionary workers, law enforcement officers and the men and women servicing our military, especially those in harm’s way.

Visitation service was held on the evening of Aug. 13 at the First Southern Baptist Church in Wickenburg, of which he was a member.

The memorial service and interment was held at the Wickenburg Municipal Cemetery on Aug. 14, followed by a celebration of his life held at Los Caballeros Ranch. Pastor Dean Stanley, who shared long talks with Jim during his preparations to meet the Lord, performed the services.

Arrangements were made by the Frey Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Wickenburg.

Jim leaves his beloved wife June, a loving son Clifford, many dear relatives and special friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Adelbert (Bert), father William (Bill) and mother Dolores (Lola).

Jim has gone home to the Lord and will be greatly missed. The family requests that contributions be made in Jim’s memory to a charity of their choice.
