The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ August 25, 2004, p. B7 Dr. Gerald L. Mraz passed away Aug. 19, 2004 in Surprise, Ariz., at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 15 days. He was born in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Oct. 4, 1913, the son of Jaroslav G. Mraz and Theodora Bell Mraz, both noted violin instructors. Dr. Mraz attended schools in Oklahoma, where he received his B.S. degree in Zoology and M.D. degree from the University of Oklahoma. He served an internship in Vancouver, Canada; residency in pathology at Stanford University; and a second residency in King's Country Hospital, St. Bernardine's Hospital, and the San Bernardino County Hospital, where he was also a member of the teaching staff. During his private practice of 25 years in Fontana and San Clemente, Calif., he was also on the teaching staff of Laguna Beach Hospital. During World War II, he served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy. Dr. Mraz was quite active in community affairs. He served for 10 years as board member and two years as president of the Fontana Unified School District school board. His last medical assignment was with the U.S. Army at Fort Ord, Calif., and Germany, where he served a total of 23 years. Dr. Mraz was a member of Sigma Chi College fraternity, a long-time member of the Mason Lodge and the Shriners. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club and the American Legion. He especially took pride in being a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Wickenburg. Dr. Mraz loved boating and flying. He had his private pilot's license with instrument rating. Dr. Mraz is survived by his loving wife Virginia and children John Mraz of Mexico City, Mexico; Lucinda Mraz of Newport Beach, Calif., and David Mraz of Albuquerque, N.M. He is also survived by stepchildren Robert (Mor) Seidel of Monterey, Calif., Christine (Ron) Williams of Salinas Calif., Theresa (Lance) Houseman of Forest City, Calif., Virginia Seidel of Carmel Valley, Calif., Andrea (Mario) Weaghington of Salinas, Calif., and Jacqueline Seidel of Marianna, Penn.; and seven step-grandchildren. Dr. Mraz has two surviving sisters, Milada Newill of Edgewood, N.M., and Fiala Roberson of Santa Rosa, Calif. He was predeceased by his first wife Nancy. He leaves many dear relatives and special friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Anthony of Padua in Wickenburg at 1 p.m. Friday (Aug. 27) with Fr. Brian Bell officiating with Msgr. Joseph Supa and Fr. John Vogt. Arrangements were made by Frey Funeral Home. |
