The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ September 1, 2004, p. A11 Sophie Labrosse was born Oct. 23, 1929 in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada to parents Frances and Stanley Nykiel and left us on Aug. 30, 2004. She received her education in Brandon and was employed in the banking industry there. She met her late husband Romeo when he was in the First Canadian Parachute Battalion, and they were married on July 2, 1949. They resided there for a number of years and in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, where her daughter Janice was born and later moved back to Brandon to enter into business there. They moved to Winnipeg and finally settled in the U.S., residing in Vestal, N.Y., Burlington, Vt., and Royal Palm Beach, Fla. After her husband's passing in 1999, she moved to be with her family in southern Mississippi and finally came to live with her daughter in Wickenburg. Even though Sophie was mostly homebound when she came to Wickenburg, she quickly went to work making sure everyone she met knew her likes, dislikes and that she was passionate about her beliefs. Just ask Frank at his restaurant. He had the "Sophia" soup she loved so much; and Sangini's, where she would check on her delivery of ravioli; and Suzi Killman, informing to make sure she didn't look like a country singer. Mom was movie star quality and fussy. With her continued illness, she grew a tight bond with the staff at Wickenburg Regional Medical Center and treated them like family. She let them know just how she liked things, but felt her safest under their care. She called Dr. Mathurin her boyfriend, and thank God he was there for her at the end. She wanted it that way. She is survived by her daughters Janice (Paul) Sullivan and Karla (Tom) Wright, brother Stan (Edie) Nykiel, grandsons Thomas and Tyler, niece Jody Nykiel and her two furry grandchildren, George and Bear. Viewing is Friday (Sept. 3) from 3 to 6:30 p.m., with a scripture service at 3:30 p.m. at Frey Funeral Home. Arrangements were by the Wickenburg Funeral Home. |
