Gill F. Snyder, longtime businessman who was active in a variety of horse activities in the Wickenburg area, passed away Friday (Sept. 10). He was 68.

Snyder, who lived in Morristown, was born in Newark, N.J. on May 26, 1936 and moved to Arizona with his family in 1946 due to health reasons. His health improved, and he began to excel in the sports he loved.

"In the horse world, he was one of the good ol' boys," noted local resident J.J. Fletcher, who was active with Snyder in roping events and the annual Desert Caballeros Ride here the past 10 years.

Snyder was past president of Desert Caballeros, active member of the Wickenburg Rotary, served several terms as president of the Wickenburg Roping Club, long time charter member of the Wickenburg Elks Lodge and Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce, and board member of the Arizona Quarter Horse Racing Association.

"He was extremely civic-minded and wanted to see the community grow in the right way," noted Snyder's cousin Glenn Gill, who is presently serving as the Maricopa County Constable for the Wickenburg and Sun Cities areas. "He was instrumental in introducing me to the community."

Gill said he had assisted Snyder in making deliveries for the Standard Oil Bulk Plant here in the 1960s. He noted that Snyder followed the legacy of his father Dan, who also was active in development of the Wickenburg area.

He worked for his father at Snyder Transfer and Feed. Later, he expanded the business to Sun City and Phoenix and acquired a franchise with Allied Van Lines Moving and Storage. In the late 1980s, Gill sold the moving company. He and his wife Marguerite opened the Snyder Mini Storage of Wickenburg and managed his ranch in Morristown, where he raised quarter horses for racing and roping.

Walt Lanz, current president of the Wickenburg Rotary Club and tenant/caretaker of Snyder Mini Storage for the past six years, noted that Snyder visited his accounting office twice a week.

"We had fun over the years," said Lanz, who was sponsored into the Rotary Club almost four years ago by Snyder. "He had a great sense of humor."

Glenn Kardinal, considered Snyder's best friend, was out of town on vacation this week and could not be reached for his thoughts.

Snyder is survived by his wife Marguerite, children Phil Snyder of Yarnell and Christina Wells of Monroe, Wis., his sister Patti Eldridge of Redondo Beach, Calif., and two grandchildren.

A gathering of remembrance will be held at Gill and Marguerite's ranch in Morristown at a date to be announced in the near future.

Arrangements were made by Wickenburg Funeral Home.
