The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ November 17, 2004, p. B7 Barbara B. Binney passed away Nov. 11. She was 88 years old. Barbara was born in Chicago, Ill., on Sept. 5, 1916, to George and Lelia Binney. She is survived by Helen Dudley, her nephews William Blew and John Blew, and her niece Ann McKenna. Barbara graduated from Morgan Park High School and attended Northwestern University for two years. She left Chicago in 1943 and worked in Dallas and Denver before moving to California, where she worked for the State of California until 1971, when she moved to Wickenburg because of health problems. Shortly after arriving in Wickenburg, she became a member of the Gem and Mineral Society. She edited the Society's newsletter for 16 years. Barbara was voted into the American Federation of Mineralogy Society's Bulletin Hall of Fame for her enthusiasm and for being a "goodwill ambassador" for the Wickenburg Society. In 1977, Barbara was elected a director of Wickenburg Community Services Corporation and shortly afterwards became secretary of that organization, an office she held until 2001. In her later years, she traveled to the Galapagos Island, England, Hawaii, Tahiti, and around the U.S. Barbara was a gifted writer and artist, lover of nature, the out-of-doors, and pets; a person with many friends who rose above adversity to fashion a full and satisfying life. Her nephew John Blew wrote that "while Barbara had always lived relatively modestly, she had also been fiercely independent and had the utmost integrity." She had written to him that "I have had a good life and have done a lot of things I had wanted to do (as well as a lot I didn't want to do.)." A memorial service will be conducted by Pastor Jim Longstreet at 10 a.m. Thursday (Nov. 18) at Frey Funeral Home, 980 N. Tegner St. Any memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Wickenburg. |
