The East Valley Tribune February 27, 2005 Bertha M. Tate Vest, longtime resident of Chandler and honored in 2003 as Chandler's Pioneer of the Year, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at the home of her daughter in Phoenix, AZ. She was 99 years old. Born June 9, 1905 in Drexel, Missouri, to Charles and Lesbia TATE, Bertha, known as "Babe" to family and friends, came to Chandler in 1917. She was in Chandler High School's first graduating class of 1923. To her brothers and sister, Bertha was truly her mother's assistant, and they were well cared for by a wonderful older sister. She earned a teaching certificate from Tempe Normal School (now ASU) in 1925, and then she began a long teaching career in the fourth grade of Chandler Grammar School, and later served as principal of Higley School for many years. She also taught in Queen Creek as well as at the junior high and high school in Chandler. Throughout those years, her specialty was penmanship, and students in her classes were instructed well in that art. She later earned bachelors and masters degrees from ASU. She married Robert VEST, captain of the Chandler National Guard, in 1926, and together they made great contributions to Chandler's early history. She was a charter member of the Chandler Christian Church and a charter member (1936) of the Chandler Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include two daughters, Roberta A. VEST of Phoenix and Virginia REEVES of Cortez, Colorado; sister, Edith TATE SHEPHERD; brothers, Forrest TATE and Lloyd TATE; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and one grandson. Visitation at Bueler Mortuary, 14 W. Hulet Dr. Chandler. Interment at Valley of the Sun Cemetery. See Also: ASU Alumni |
