The White Mountain Independent Show Low, Arizona 09/11/2009 Rex P. Shumway, 86, of Mesa died Sept. 5, 2009, in Mesa. He was born March 16, 1923, the 10th of 11 children born to Wilson A. Shumway and Ruth Smith Shumway. He is preceded in death by all of his family but one sister. Mr. Shumway was born and raised in Shumway and attended Snowflake High School. He moved to Winslow in 1950, where he met and married his sweetheart, Annabelle. Rex worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a brakeman and conductor for 37 years. He and Annabelle were active members of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and he served in many different capacities. After retirement, he and Annabelle served a two-year mission (1988-90) for the church in the Mesa Temple. Rex and Annabelle moved to Mesa in 1991 and he continued working in the Temple for another 16 years. He loved his family, friends, working in the temple, golf, watching sports, gardening, playing games, good jokes and Annabelle. They celebrated their 54th anniversary in December 2008. Rex is survived by his wife, Annabelle; children Louise (Robert) Laux of Mesa, Rex W. (Mary) Shumway of Winslow, Paul D. (Lorna) Shumway Mesa and Mary (Joel) Davis of Mesa; stepsons Jim (Mary Ann) Caradine of Texas and Jon (Liz) Caradine of Virginia; sister Mauretta Walker of Mesa; 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Viewing will be Thursday, Sept. 10, from 6-8 p.m. at Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park, 400 S. Power Road in Mesa (southwest corner of Power and Broadway). Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Dana Ranch Ward building, 1266 S. 32nd St. Mesa. Interment will be Saturday Sept. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Reed Hatch Memorial Cemetery in Taylor. See Also: Find A Grave |
