Thomas Wesley James, 72, died July 14, 2004 at his home in Pinedale.

He was born Sept. 19, 1931 to E.D. and Nora P. Dempsey James in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Mesa High School in 1949, and was the photographer for the Mesa High School yearbook. Tom also was a freelance photographer for the local Mesa paper and worked for the original Harkins Theatre as a projectionist. He served in the US Air Force as a staff sergeant from July 24, 1951 to July 30, 1955, serving three of those years overseas, stationed at Burtonwood Air Force Base in Warrington, England. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. James was with Air-research/Garret Corporation as an instrumentation engineer for 39 years. He held amateur radio license W7OPS at age 19, which he held for over 53 years and enjoyed repairing any sort of electronic equipment. He was past president of the Scottsdale Radio Club, Kachina Amateur Radio Club, Quarter Century Wireless Association, Amateur Radio Relay League, and the Arizona Repeater Association.

He married Beth Eaton June 16, 2003. He has three children, daughter, Karen James; son John (Lesa) James; daughter Sharon (Kent) Nelson; and son Tony Eaton; grandchildren, Kaycee (James) and Brandon Gardner, Nick James, Steven Eaton, Britney Nelson, Lizzie Eaton and Cheri Eaton; great-grandson Braydon James Gardner; and mother, Nola Pearl Dempsey.

Grandpa Tommy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who liked traveling, racing turbine powered cars at the Bonneville Salt Flats and Circle Track Racing with family members.

Services will be held Saturday, July 17 at 10 a.m. at the Life Community Church with Pastor Eric Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Pinedale Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fletcher's Mortuary of Show Low.
