From the Arizona Daily Star (August 3, 2009): Linda Ann Nadell, 68, passed away peacefully at home on August 1, 2009. She was born May 26, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, to Miriam and Harold Richman. Linda grew up in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn with her loving parents, older brother Bob, and a large extended family close by. Linda was very close to her maternal grandmother, who passed on her wonderful cooking skills as well as her dedication to causes of social justice. Linda graduated in 1958 from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn. During the summer before her last year of high school, Linda worked as a counselor at the Hebrew Education Society Summer Camp in Monroe, New York, where she met her former husband Randolph Nadell. Linda attended Brooklyn College during the two years after her high school graduation. Linda and Randy were married in 1960 and moved to Tucson in the fall of 1961 with their infant daughter Debbi. Linda finished her undergraduate degree at the University of Arizona, graduating with a Bachelor's in Elementary Education in 1964. She taught at the Jewish Community Center pre-school while working on her master's degree in Special Education, which she received in 1967 when she was eight and a half months pregnant with her second daughter, Shari-Beth. Linda taught special needs children for two years at Gump School in Tucson Unified School District. She spent several years as a homemaker, busy with raising her two older girls and their younger sister Allycyn who was born in 1971. During this time, her creative side was in the spotlight, as she took up weaving and sold many of her creations at local craft shows. Linda returned to work in 1977 for Lawyers and Judges Publishing Company and then worked for many years for the Tucson Association for Child Care, now called Child and Family Resources, Inc. As the Marketing Director for Child and Family Resources, she worked on agency development and a variety of individual programs, including those providing in-home care for sick children and education for teenage mothers. She retired in 1999. Linda married Alan Levenson in 1994. Especially after they both had retired, they traveled extensively. While they visited many destinations, high points were always the visits with family and, especially, the trips to celebrate grandchildren's birthdays. In Tucson, Linda enjoyed supporting local causes, and she served on the Advisory Committee for the University of Arizona School of Music and the University of Arizona Women's Studies Advisory Council. Linda was a longtime and devoted member of Temple Emanu-El, joining shortly after she moved to Tucson in the 1960s. She taught in the religious school, served as President of the sisterhood, and served in many positions on the Board of Directors. Linda became a Bat Mitzvah at Temple Emanu-El in 2001. At the time her brain tumor was diagnosed in the summer of 2008, Linda was beginning her term as President of the Temple, a position she had looked forward to holding for many years. We will miss Linda's love and encouragement and her absolute certainty that her children could accomplish anything they choose to do. She was a strong and influential presence in our lives, who could be counted on to provide comfort in times of need and celebration in times of joy. We extend our thanks to the caring staff of the Arizona Cancer Center, University Medical Center, St. Joseph's Hospital, TMC Hospice and Soreo Select, and we also thank the many friends and family who have helped us during Linda's illness and especially through her final weeks. Survivors include Linda's husband, Alan Levenson; daughters, Deborah (Steven Birkel) of Portland, Oregon, Shari-Beth (Jeffrey Kellogg) of Allentown, New Jersey, and Allycyn Jacobs (Rex) of Oro Valley; stepchildren, Jonathan Levenson (Jackie Armstrong) of Bermuda and Nancy Levenson (Suzy Fuquea) of La Serena, Chile; grandchildren, Elyse, Naomi, Jake, Logan, Jack, Sophie, Kristina and Brianna; and brother, Robert Richman of Tucson. The funeral service will be held at Temple Emanu-El, 225 N. Country Club Road, on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at 9:30 a.m. with Rabbi Samuel Cohon officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Donations in Linda's memory may be made to the Strauss Center for Early Childhood Education at Temple Emanu-El.
