The Arizona Daily Sun Saturday, October 03, 2009 John Howard McMurphy, 83, of Flagstaff, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009, at Flagstaff Medical Center. Mr. McMurphy was born in Flint, Mich., on March 7, 1926, to Frank and Grace McMurphy. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for K-Mart for 22 years, managing the camera department. He moved to Phoenix in 1972 and then transferred to Prescott Valley in the late 1970s. Mr. McMurphy love music; he enjoyed listening to music on the radio, played the tuba in the Salvation Army Band, went dancing with his wife, sang in the Prescottones Barbershop Choir and his church choir and enjoyed hearing the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. He enjoyed visiting Austria and Sedona. He had fond memories of fishing with his dad. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for many years and an active member of the Lutheran church for more than 40 years. His believed that "life is beautiful." His proudest moments were when his daughters were married. Mr. McMurphy is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara McMurphy of Flagstaff; daughters Colleen (Francis) Keegan of Flagstaff, and Diane (Gregory) Brysselbout of Buckeye; son Stephen McMurphy of Austria; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Dennis DeMaria and sister Lorraine Fisher, of Lansing, Mich. A service to celebrate Mr. McMurphy's life will be Monday, at 11 a.m., at Peace Lutheran Church. A visitation will be Sunday, 7 to 8 p.m., at the Norvel Owens Mortuary and again Monday morning, one hour prior to services at Peace Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in the Veteran's Section of Citizens Cemetery with military honors. Condolences can be sent to his family at www.norvelowensmortuary.com.
