Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona Thursday, October 08, 2009 John Gilbert Cruz Sr., 68, of Flagstaff, died Oct. 3, 2009, in Ganado. He was born on Nov. 21, 1940, to Francisco Gilberto Cruz and Nora Peña in Williams and lived in Flagstaff most of his life. John was a person that loved to laugh and make people happy. He became a Christian in 1968 and was a member of the Christ's Church of Flagstaff. He served in the U.S. Army as an Intelligence Specialist retiring in 1968. During his time in the Army, he was awarded a Purple Heart. He was an apartment manager for 23 years and he currently worked for U.S. Census Bureau for the last two census counts. Mr. Cruz is survived by his loving wife, Cynthia, of 13 years; sons Nathan Cruz and Juan G. Cruz Jr. of Page; daughters Yvonne Cruz (J.J. Jumbo) of Kaibeto, Juanita C. (Orlando) Yazzie of Flagstaff and Sara Cruz of Casa Grande; stepchildren Amber Pateaude, John M. Holsten, Mark D. Holsten and David R. Holsten; sister Rosemarie (Rudy) Acevedo; brothers-in-law Ricky Tabatt and Kenneth Tabatt; five grandchildren; and many aunts uncles and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. A funeral service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Christ's Church Flagstaff, 3475 E. Soliere Ave. Burial will follow at the Citizens Cemetery, 1300 S. San Francisco St., with Veterans honors rendered by the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Marine Corps League and the Military Order of Purple Hearts.
