Lozano's Flagstaff Mortuary Flagstaff, Arizona (April 20, 1927 - October 11, 2008) Martha Fields passed away suddenly and unexpectedly Saturday morning, October 11, 2008. She was 81 years old. She is survived by her children, Brandon Fields, Teresa Morgan, Kevin Fields, and Melissa Jerrel. She also has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Martha (maiden name: Jerrel) was born and raised in Mt. Pleasant, IA. Her father, Bert Jerrel, was a local businessman. Her mother, Florence Van Hon, worked as a cook at Mt. Pleasant Mental Health Institute. The family attended St. Michael's Episcopal Church. Martha moved to Tucson, AZ, after graduating from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1945. Over the next ten years, she would have four of her five children: Jerry, Brandon, Teresa, and Kevin. In September of 1960, Martha moved to Kayenta, AZ, where she worked as secretary for Kayenta Boarding School for 13 years. There she had her fifth child, Melissa. Her first grandchild, Angelee, was also born in Kayenta, whom she helped care for. All five of her children graduated from Monument Valley High School. In the 1970s, Martha returned to school to earn her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. For the next 15 years, she once again served in the Navajo Nation, this time as a special education teacher (in Dennehotso and Kayenta) and coordinator (in Tuba City). Martha retired in 1992. She lost her oldest son, Jerry, to diabetes in 2005. He taught elementary school in Chilchinbeto, AZ, and then in Cortez, CO. Brandon is a retired nuclear engineer living with his wife, Mary, in the Washington, D.C. area. Teresa is the assistant superintendent of schools in Coconino County and currently lives with her husband, Jim, in Flagstaff, AZ. Kevin is an educator in health sciences living with his wife, Carole, in Grand Rapids, MI. Melissa is a chemist at the power plant in Page, AZ. Angelee is an attorney practicing in Northern Arizona while living in Flagstaff. Martha has been a constant source of comfort and inspiration for her family. As a source of comfort, she loved us unconditionally. As a source of inspiration, she taught us to search always for truth. She is the rock of this family and she will be dearly missed.
