The Navajo - Hopi Observer, Flagstaff, Arizona Tuesday, September 29, 2009 Specialist Arlis Oliver Sloan, 43, died at Flagstaff Medical Center on Monday, Sept. 21, 2009. He proudly served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne and 10th Mountain Division in Fort Benning, Ga. between 1984 and 1994. He served in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm and was honorably discharged in 1994. Sloan graduated from high school at St. Johns. He then attended Diné College and earned an AA and AAS degree in Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. He attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and was working on his BA in Applied Indigenous Studies. He is noted for his 2002 AIHEC Award for academic excellence and outstanding community achievement. He was also a member of The National Scholars Honor Society. Survivors include his father, LeRoy Sloan and mother, Orphia "Help" Sloan; brothers Reggie Sloan, Rory Sloan, and Sheldon Sloan; sisters Natalie Sloan, Dayna Smith, Genevieve Begay, and Madeline Sloan; 29 of his beloved nieces and nephews; as well as one nullie.
