Katherine Lucinda (Kay) (Cook) Bowman |

Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona Sunday, September 06, 2009 Katherine Lucinda Cook-Bowman, 58, died May 20, 2009, in Phoenix. "Kay" was born May 13, 1951, in Topeka, Kan., to Benjamin and Patricia Cook. Her family later moved to Phoenix, where she graduated from Washington High School and then from Arizona State University. She was married to Gary Edward Bowman on Aug. 10, 1984. Together, they lived in Winslow; Flagstaff; South Bend, Ind.; and her beloved Chicago. She taught elementary school in Buckeye, in Winslow and -- for many years -- at Cromer Elementary School in Flagstaff. Mrs. Cook-Bowman endured more trials, through no fault of her own, than any human should have to. Yet through it all, she maintained an easy laugh, a will to go on and a sense of grace that speaks to the nobility of the human spirit. In a world that treated her so unkindly, she possessed a deep humility as well as a generosity and kindness toward both people and animals; she rightly had little tolerance for the unkind or unjust among us. Always unassuming, she shunned recognition of both her qualities and of the challenges she had faced. She cherished the rich yet simple pleasures in life -- the love and companionship of family, of good friends and of animals; her home; good food; antique shopping; the neighborhoods of Chicago. Her last words to her husband were "I love my family." She is survived by her husband, Gary, of Flagstaff; sister Corinne Cole of Phoenix; and brother and sister-in-law, Ross and Reva Cook of Winslow. It is a tragic irony that, in the end, Kay lost her life not to any illness, but to human error. An informal commemoration and celebration of her life will be Saturday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m., at 910 N. Leroux St., Flagstaff. Contributions should be made to an animal welfare organization of choice. |
