Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona Friday, September 04, 2009 Marie Elizabeth Hughes, 87, of Flagstaff, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009. Mrs. Hughes was born March 10, 1922, in the District of Columbia to John and Margaretna Furlong. As a young child, she moved to Arizona with her family. In 1942, she married William M. Hughes, and they moved to Flagstaff in 1975. They enjoyed many years together until his passing in October 2002. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker. She work as receptionist for doctors' offices and then with The American Cancer Society, which she loved. She enjoyed her family and friends, nature, baseball and feeding her wild cats. Her grandson, Jerad, was the apple of her eye. Mrs. Hughes is survived by children William (Carolyn) Hughes of Flagstaff and Linda Lee Hughes of Laguna Beach, Calif.; grandson Jerad Hughes of Flagstaff; brother Johnny (Mary) Furlong of Tucson; sister Edna Altman of Phoenix; and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Norvel Owens Mortuary Chapel, 914 E. Route 66. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Hughes asked that donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, 2724 E. Lakin Drive, Suite 9, Flagstaff, AZ 86004.
