Tom Ryan, a Flagstaff native, died July 15, 2009. He was born in 1921.

He was an altar boy under Father Albouy and remained a devout Catholic throughout his life. He excelled in track as a young man. When World War II broke out, he enlisted in the Navy, where he served on the USS Hobby for three years. After the war, he began his 38-year career as a quality assurance specialist with the Department of Defense out at Navajo Ordnance Depot. He married the love of his life, Leona "Jerry" Ryan, in Flagstaff in 1950. Together they were transferred throughout the world, including Germany, Italy, Okinawa and many stateside assignments until Mr. Ryan's retirement in 1974, when they returned home to Flagstaff.

For 13 years, Mr. Ryan enjoyed being part of the volunteer team at the FMC, where he and his wife ("Tom and Jerry") distributed magazines to grateful patients. A very kind and gentle man, he will be long remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and dedication to his family.

Mr. Ryan is survived by his wife of 59 years; his two boys, David (Ellen) and Randy; his sister-in-law, Juanette New; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, William, mother Anna, brother Jim and brother-in-law Frank New of Camp Verde.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Arizona Chapter American Parkinson Disease Association 2033 E. Speedway Blvd, Suite 203, Tucson, AZ 85719.

The family wishes to thank all of their supportive friends and neighbors, Joe Carter's Rehabilitation Center, and Sisters Elizabeth and Augustine. They would also like to express grateful appreciation to Lisa Kennedy and her wonderful staff for their loving care of Mr. Ryan at the Aspen House.

A service/Mass will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe, 224 Kendrick St., in Flagstaff.

Condolences may be sent to the family at condolences@Lozanos-FlagstaffMortuary.com. Lozano's Flagstaff Mortuary is handling arrangements.
