Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, Arizona Tuesday, July 28, 2009 Heber C. Jackson, 100, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, died Saturday, July 25, 2009, at the Little Colorado Medical Center. Mr. Jackson was born Nov. 1, 1908, in Augusta, Ill., to Dora and Sam Jackson. He graduated from Augusta High School in 1926, and one year later, he married his sweetheart, Elvalae Kimble. They celebrated 63 years of marriage before her death. His many jobs while living in Illinois included working on farm, driving a truck for a paper mill, driving a bakery truck, repairing radios in a radio shop and working for Caterpillar Corporation. In 1943, he and his family moved to Winslow so he could work on the Santa Fe Railroad as a brakeman and later as a conductor. He continued working for the railroad until his retirement in 1973. After retiring from the Santa Fe Railroad, he learned the locksmith trade and worked in that profession for many years. Mr. Jackson was very interested and active in the city of Winslow and served on the city Planning and Zoning Commission as a member and chairman for more than 14 years. He also served as treasurer for the Santa Fe Credit Union for 33 years and on the Northland Pioneer College Board of Directors for 20 years. In 1977, he was named Winslow Man of the Year and in 1996 was named Winslow Citizen of the Year. He has been a longtime member and held many positions at the First Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Winslow Masonic Lodge, Winslow Shrine and Eastern Star. Everyone who knew him knew of his love for his family, his church, Arby's and Winslow. He will be missed by many. He is survived by daughters Jackie (Paul) Landis of Winslow and Delores Tafoya of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his wife, Elvalae; son Seldon; and daughter-in-law Ethel Jackson. A celebration of his life will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 411 N. Warren, in Winslow. Viewing will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Greer's Mortuary of Winslow.
