David S. Hing

David S. Hing, age 96, died Oct. 20, 2005, at Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott. He was born Sept. 9, 1909, in Canton, China, to Wee Soon and Hom Shee Soon.

David is survived by his wife, Ida Hing of Prescott; brother and sister of Winnipeg, Canada; one sister in California, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Soo Hoo in 2002.

David moved to Albuquerque, N.M., at the age of 13, then moved to Chandler. In the 1920's, David worked in the grocery store for a few years, and went to Sacramento High School, while still working and learning the grocer and meat business. He worked in Chandler until 1939, and became a partner of a grocery store in Yuma, until the store was destroyed by fire and could not be rebuilt. Friends and loyal customers tried to help to rebuild with funds, but supplies were short because of the war.

David was in WWII. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and served 33 months in France and Germany in the Artillery Company A 883 F.A.

After the war, David returned to Yuma to build three stores. David moved to Prescott in 1954 and started the Food Basket Market on White Spur Road where he worked from 1954 to 1984. David served on the Chamber of Commerce Board and took part in other community activities. He also served as Chairman of the Salvation Army. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club for 65 years, past President and Lt. Governor and a member of Atzlan Lodge #1, Mason's Elzaribah Shriners and the 1st Congregational Church of Prescott. Also he was the Man of the Year in 1967. David also sat on the Hospital Board of Prescott.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005, at 10 a.m., at the 1st Congregational Church, 216 E. Gurley in Prescott. Burial will be Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.

Contributions may be sent to the 1st Congregational Church of Prescott and The Elzaribah Transportation Fund, 522 N. 40th St., Phoenix, AZ 85008.
