Contra Costa Times, Walnut Creek, Calif. March 2, 2005 Robert H. Ausfahl, Sept. 2, 1916 - Feb. 16, 2005. Bob was a native of Arizona, born next to a Navajo Indian Reservation. He was the only child of Rowena and Fred Ausfahl and lived in Clarkdale, AZ until the age of 8 when the family moved to California, living in the East Bay. Bob attended school in Richmond, CA and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Civil Engineering. While at Cal, he worked on Standard Oil of California (now known as Chevron-Texaco) oil tankers, sailing between California and the East Coast. While a student at Berkeley, Bob met his future wife, Doris. He was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and participated in club boxing and was a member of the track team. Upon graduation, he joined the Chevron Company for a lifelong career, retiring as an executive in 1973. While at Chevron, he was selected as a Sloan Fellow and received a Masters Degree in 1950 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Upon returning to Chevron, he participated in an executive loan program to the US government and was one of the founding managers of Lawrence Livermore Lab. He was very active in the American Petroleum Institute in a variety of leadership roles. Bob had many interests and remained active until his death. He loved the Sierras and was an avid fly fisherman. He was taught to fish by his father and he passed his passion for the sport onto his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed following the Oakland A's and Cal sports. He also loved Hawaii, its people and its culture, and visited there over fifty times. He was an avid golfer, scoring 2 holes-in-one after 50 years of playing and enjoyed many golf trips with friends. He spent many enjoyable hours playing bridge and dominoes with family and friends. He spent the majority of his life in Contra Costa County, the last 16 years in Rossmoor, where he was active in the Rossmoor Rotary Club, SIRS and the Rossmoor Duo Club. He was a founding member of the East Bay Genius Club. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Doris, sons, King and Bill, daughter-in-law, Trudy, grandsons, Tom, Andy and Matt, granddaughters-in-law, Corinna and Ali, and great-granddaughters, Emma, Catharina, Charlotte and Daisy. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life on Monday, March 14, at 11am at Rossmoor in the Fireside Room at the Gateway Clubhouse.
