Arizona Silver Belt, Globe, AZ Wednesday, Oct 14th, 2009 (1922-2009) Augustine "Gutie" Gonzales, 77, was called home on Friday, Oct. 9, 2009. A life-long resident of the Globe-Miami area, "Gutie" was employed at the smelter of Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company for 30-plus years, and was a U.S. Army Veteran. Gutie attended Miami High School, where he was an outstanding athlete in football and baseball. He pitched a "no-hitter" his senior year, which prompted the Cleveland Indians to invite Gutie to their training camp and a try-out. After graduation in 1951, duty to country called and he was stationed at Fort Huachuca. After completing his military service, Gutie returned home and helped care for his mother upon the death of his father in 1953. His deep commitment and responsibility to family redirected his ambitions to play pro baseball. Gutie continued to play baseball and softball in the local area for many years and would visit many nieces and nephews to play catch in their backyards. He also coached the Cubitto's Jewelry Pony League Baseball Team in 1957. In his later years, Gutie would park in the outfield to watch Little League, community, or local high school games with his best companion of many years, his dog Buddy. Gutie leaves behind in loving memory, brothers Gilbert "Veto" Gonzales of Peoria, Raymond "Monchie" Gonzales of Central Heights, Jesus "Chuy" Gonzales of Miami, and Manuel "Manny" (Adelina) of Claypool; and sisters, Eleanor Ramos and Adela "Fefa" Lopez, both of Miami. He was preceded in death by his parents, Trinidad and Refugia "Cuca" (Regalado) Gonzales of Puerto Rico Canyon; brothers, Jose Saenz, Vicente Gonzales; and sisters, Simona Ybarra, Carmen Macias, Lupe Ortega, and Angela Amado. He is also survived by, and was a father figure to, a very special niece, Valentina Lopez; and nephews Felipe and Jacob "JJ" Lopez Jr. He had 73 nieces and nephews, and countless great-nieces and nephews. Augustine "Gutie" Gonzales, our brother, uncle, Nino, and friend, will be greatly missed. His quiet, humble manner was a gift to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 15 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Miami, Ariz. beginning with the Rosary at 9 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Pinal Mountain Cemetery. Assisting the family is Lamont Mortuary of Globe. See Also: Find A Grave |
