Longtime Goodyear police officer dies by Mike Burkett, staff writer Frederic William Funk, 64, a longtime homicide detective for the Goodyear Police Department, died March 19, 2005. Mr. Funk was born in Flushing, N.Y. A veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserve, he served aboard the U.S.S. Essex. As a police officer, Mr. Funk worked for the communities of Avondale, Phoenix, Peoria and Goodyear, where he invested 30 years of his career before retiring in October 2001. "I'm not just going to give up and start fishing," Funk told the West Valley View upon his retirement. "But I do think it's time to move on, give someone else the opportunity I've had." Becoming a homicide detective was what Funk wanted to do from the start. "My grandfather, ever since I was little, used to sit me on his knee and tell me stories of solving homicides," said Funk, who began his law enforcement career in the New York Police Department. During citywide layoffs in the mid '70s, Funk's cousin - a Phoenix police officer - advised him to come West. After working briefly for the Peoria and Avondale police departments, Funk settled in Goodyear. Mr. Funk is survived by his wife, Esther Hernandez Funk, of Phoenix; one son, Kevin; and his mother, Mary. A funeral Mass was celebrated March 23.
