Kermit Cuyler Smith

Kermit Cuyler Smith, age 57, died April 21, 2006, in Prescott Valley, Ariz. He was born Aug. 23, 1948, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, to Cuyler and Fern (Marmon) Smith. Kermit was the youngest of two children, the eldest being his sister Janice.

He grew up in Belle Center, Ohio, where he graduated high school in 1966 as senior valedictorian. He attended Bowling Green State University, earning a Political Science degree in Education. While at BGSU, Kermit was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Shortly after graduating, he was drafted by the U.S. Army and served two years as a Military Policeman in Frankfort, Germany.

In 1974, he married Suzanne Marie Kreidler and moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., where their three daughters were born. In December of 1974 Ange-Lisa Kathlene was born, followed by Airion Ann in September of 1978 and Ashley Erica in October of 1980.

While in Flagstaff, Kermit earned two master's degrees at Northern Arizona University, one in elementary education and another in business administration. In the years following, Kermit held positions in the Arizona educational system including being Head Teacher at Maine Consolidated School District, qhief Deputy for Coconino County Superintendent of Schools, Business Manager at Tolleson Union High School District, and Chief Financial Officer at Mingus Mountain Estates Residential Center.

His dedication to youth culminated during the last several years of his life at Mingus Mountain Academy as the Director of Education and most recently as a Behavioral Health Technician.

Kermit is survived by his mother, Fern of Phoenix, Ariz.; his sister, Janice of Phoenix, Ariz.; his daughters, Ange-Lisa (Thomas) Ashbeek of Mesa, Ariz., Airion (Eric) Rivero of Tampa, Fla., and Ashley (Daniel) Shuler of Litchfield Park; his grandchild, Ellena Isia Rivero; and his step-children, Andy Gallagher of San Diego, Calif., Pamela Gallagher of New York, N.Y., and Alanna Gallagher of Phoenix, Ariz.

Commemoration services in honor of Kermit will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2006, at Mingus Mountain Academy located at HC67 Highway 89A N. Junction 151. Phone number 602-335-2060.

Kermit is dearly loved and surely missed.
