The Kingman Daily Miner, Kingman, Arizona Wednesday, August 12, 2009 Vernon Hier, 82, of Kingman passed away Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at The Gardens in Kingman. He was born Dec. 14, 1926, in Santa Monica, Calif., and moved to Kingman 18 years ago from Sepulveda, Calif. Vernon had one year of college; he worked as a heavy equipment mechanic. He enlisted and served with the 82nd Army Airborne for five years. Soon after his discharge, he married Beryle. In 1984, he was electrocuted with 15,000 volts, was revived and survived numerous burns and surgeries. He learned to walk again and returned to square dancing. He and his present wife, Jeanette, who he married in 1988, spent many hours square and round dancing for several years until his Parkinson's disease prevented them from doing so. They also enjoyed many trips with their trailer from Maine to Washington to California and many places in between. He was a member of Kingman Presbyterian Church, TOPS and Kingman Social Club. He was a master gardener, always ready to answer gardening questions or do research with his extensive library to help whoever needed help. He was a kind, gentle person with a wonderful sense of humor and always helpful. He was a member of the arthritis water aerobics class at the Wellness Center; he loved all his "girls." Vernon's artistic side was expressed by creating stained glass windows, lamps and assorted hangings. There are five windows installed at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church on the north side of the sanctuary. His work was meticulous and he was proud of what he accomplished. Vernon is survived by his wife, Jeanette Hier of Kingman; brothers, Bill (Mary) Hier of Quartz Hill, Calif., and Ron (Jo) Hier of Paso Robles, Calif.; and his sons, Terry Hier of California and Rick (Gay) Hier of Salt Lake City. He is also survived by stepsons, Michael (Barbara) Sawicky of Scottsdale, Allen (Reyna) Sawicky of Winnetka, Calif., and John (Jacqueline) Sawicky of Granite Bay, Calif.; stepdaughters, Linda (Mike) Perron of Brantford, Ontario, Canada, Merrie Gonzalez of Sacramento, Calif., Karin (Larry) Keister of Elko, Nev., and Nancy (Larry) Adams of Kingman; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beryle; and his mother and father, Lenora Speiss and Bernard Hier. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Vernon's life at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, at Kingman Presbyterian Church, 2425 Detroit Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Kingman Presbyterian Church. |
