The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Tuesday, April 11, 2006 Donald Robert Cary died April 8, 2006 in Prescott. Don lived his life of 85 years just as he often expressed it to others, "to be decent and decent to other people." Many who knew him enjoyed his wit and humor. Don, the son of Myron Harrison Cary and Nettie Isabel Vondell Daniels Cary, was born March 21, 1921 in Georgetown, Colo. They moved to Denver soon after when silver mining was no longer profitable and his parents had to close the silent movie theater that they operated. Later they moved to Wilton, N.Y, where Don graduated from Saratoga Springs High School. In 1940 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he became the Company Clerk at Gallupville, N.Y. Next, he helped build B-26 bombers at the Glenn L. Martin Co. in Baltimore, Md. He then served in the United States Army Infantry from 1944-46 as a Browning Automatic Rifleman during the final months of World War II in France and Germany and in occupation duty. After graduating from the Watertown School of Commerce in New York, Don soon found his way back to Colorado and studied at the Barnes School of Commerce in Denver. Over the years he took many college courses at the University of Colorado, Denver. For 30 years he was a Management Analyst for the Department of Defense at Lowry Air Force Base and the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center in Denver, where he retired in 1979. In both Prescott and the Denver area, Don held various positions in the Boy Scouts of America, United Methodist Church, Golf Course Advisory Committee for the City of Aurora, and National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. He belonged to the Optimist Club, Prescott Antique Auto Club, Prescott United Methodist Church and the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. Don served a term on both the Highland Pines Water Improvement District and the Highland Pines Property Owners Association. He also was a volunteer for several years at the Yavapai Regional Medical Center. Don met Marty Clifton in the Young Adults at Trinity Methodist Church in Denver and they were married in Gering, Neb. on June 17, 1957. With their sons they found much time to spend at their cabin west of Denver and to hike and ski and enjoy the Rockies. They often went camping on the western slope, driving their Ford Bronco over high mountain passes to find old ghost mining towns. They also enjoyed swimming and golfing together. Surviving are his wife Martha; sons, Ethan and Matthew; daughter-in-law Kathleen Barley Cary; niece Margaret Cary Button; and grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicholas, Amanda, John, James, and Joseph. Preceding him in death were son Andrew; brother Kenneth; and half brothers, Ralph, Leman, and Chester Daniels. A Celebration of the Life of Donald Robert Cary will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 15 at the Prescott United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Open Door or Prescott United Methodist Church, 505 West Gurley St., Prescott, AZ 86301. Hampton Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements. Information provided by survivors. |
