Charles "Papa Charlie" Chavez
(April 11, 1932 - September 10, 2007)

Charles P. Chavez 75, passed away on Monday, September 10, 2007. Charles was born in Bernalillo, NM on April 8, 1932, to Cornelia Sisneros and Dennis Chavez. In the 1940 he moved to Winslow with his family.

Charles served his country with pride in the Korean war, receiving three medals of honor.

Charles was employed by the sawmill in Winslow and Flagstaff, he was also a local laborer with the Arizona Laborers, and Teamsters local 395. After his retirement he was employed for a few years with Safeway as a courtesy clerk.

Charles "Papa Charlie" loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed singing to them and making them laugh.

His favorite past-times were hunting and fishing with his sons, and watching Dodgers baseball. He also had a special and kind heart to animals who he cares for up until his illness. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tony Chavez, sisters Vangie Chavez Padilla and Helen Chavez.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lucy Martinez Chavez. His children, Evangeline Chavez, Clark (Barbara) Chavez, Joseph (Karen) Chavez, Frank (Petra) Chavez, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Gilbert and Becky Martinez, Gilbert and Becky Martinez, several aunts, uncles, nieces , nephews, and cousins in Flagstaff and New Mexico.

Holy Rosary will be Sunday evening 7 pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday morning 10:00 also at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.

Interment will follow in the Veteran Section of Citizens Cemetery with Christian and military honors.
