Arizona State Miner (Wickenburg) Saturday, October 20, 1923 p4 Octogenarian Editor and National Journalist Killed We are sorry to chronicle the death of a valued friend and fellow newspaperman, John P. Irish, veteran journalist of the Pacific Coast, who died on the 7th from injuries sustained while alighting from an Oakland street car. We knew him in the early 70's and watched his energetic career in San Francisco jounalism from the time he took charge of the old Alta Californian. Though 80 years of age he took a keen interest in local politics and nationwide affairs. Like many other journalists of the old school Irish took a keen delight in espousing unpoplar humanitarian causes, generally on the side of the under-dog. The Colonel is survived by his widow, a daughter and son, John P. Irish, Jr, all of who reside in Oakland. ~~~~~~~~~~ Oakland (CA) Tribune Sunday, October 7, 1923 p1 John P. Irish Seriously Hurt Veteran Writer and Author May Die as Result of Car Accident Colonel John Powell Irish, nationally known writer and orator, and a leader in California politics since 1889, residing at 1904 Adeline street, is believed to be dying at the Oakland Emergency Hospital from injuries received late yesterday, when he was struck by a Hopkins street car at Thirteenth and Franklin streets. Colonel Irish is believed to be suffering from a basal fracture of the skull and possible internal injuries. In additon he sustained a number of severe bruises and lacerations. Little hope is held for his recovery by physicians who declare that it is doubtful that he can survive the shock because of his advanced age. The accident occurred shortly after 3:30 o'clock as the Colonel was crossing Thirteenth street at the intersection of Franklin street. He was knocked to the pavement and was unconscious when picked up by a traffic officer and placed in a passing automobile for conveyance to the infirmary. He was still unconscious at a late hour and an emergency operation was being planned as an attempt to save his life. Colonel Irish was born in Iowa City, Iowa, on January 1, 1843, and was a former newspaper man, identified with the early press in California. ~~~~~~~~~~ Oakland (CA) Tribune Monday, October 8, 1923 Funeral services for John P.
