The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ January 8, 2003, p. B6 Lauren Ray Burr passed away in his sleep on Dec. 1, 2002 having died of natural causes at the age of 94. He had been in the care of his dear friend, Dorothy Devault, in Wickenburg, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his wife Jenness Thelma Mayes; an infant daughter; a son, Alan Jarvis Burr; an adopted sister, Lorene M. Pacey; and his parents, Dennis Ray and Luela Pacey Burr. He is survived by three sons; Harley Winston, Robert Ray, and George Dennis Burr; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His remains will be interred in Durham Cemetery in Dallas City, Ill. He was born Jan. 15, 1908 in Galesburg, Ill., but spent his early years living in LaHarpe, Ill. And later moved to Galesburg where he completed high school and developed an interest in wood working with his father. He then graduated from Knox College and traveled to California and Oregon where he met Jenness. They were married on Sept. 24, 1936 and he began a career in engineering. Upon the death of his father, he inherited the family farms in Durham Township and began a new career in farming. Lauren and Jenness retired to Wickenburg, Ariz. in their later years where they built their home and enjoyed the company of many new friends and neighbors. Retirement provided an opportunity to travel throughout the U.S. and to pursue many interests including wood working and stained glass. He frequently collaborated with family and friends in designing furniture that incorporated both glass and wood. He was a member of the Wickenburg Art Club and received numerous awards in recognition of his workmanship and artistry. His creations will be treasured by future generations for many years to come. A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Wickenburg First Presbyterian Church. |
