Art Rodgers

Death never takes a wise man by surprise. Art Rodgers was ready to go-on his own terms. He had early morning coffee with his wife, laughed at his most recent condition, watched her morning star and left to make place among them. Art did whatever it took to smile at the strong odds he faced in his life. The sweat-bent and rain-battered brim of his hat tells us of his will to live his life his way.

Arthur Edward Rodgers was born on April 4, 1932 in Alma, N.M. He left us on Jan. 25, 2003. Art had retired from ranching. In his early days he had worked on a dairy, wrangled for Remuda Ranch, and did day work for many of the local ranches. After his marriage to Patricia Olea in 1954, he settled in Wickenburg, and continued wrangling and his horse shoeing before he began to work with the Arizona Highway Department.

In 1968, his dream of operating his own ranch came true. He moved with Pat to the Olea homestead 55 miles nor of Wickenburg. Here they ranched for 32 years. While ranching, he was active on the Grazing Advisory Board, was a member of and Vice President of the Arizona Mounted Sheriff Posse. He was an avid team roper, and calf roper, and a charter member of the Wickenburg Roping Club. He will be remembered as the choice partner to many of the “little ones” during the club’s fun days. He loved his years with the Desert Caballeros ride where he was employed as a popluar camp wrangler and rode as a jockey during the Wednesday horse races.

His saddle was low horn and double-cinched. His rope was seldom over 40 feet…good for brush country and a small loop. His clean gaze and infectious laughter will be miss by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, pat Rodgers and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangement handled by Frey Funeral Home.

Memorial service will be held at Bowman Area on Thursday Feb. 6, 2003 at 2:30 p.m.
