The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ March 26, 2003, p. B10 George A. Heitschmidt, 79, a long-time former Wickenburg resident, passed away of natural causes on March 3, 2003 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born on Sept. 7, 1923 in Chicago, Ill., the youngest of five children to William and Willemina Heitschmidt. He started working early in his teens by working under his father at a lithograph shop in Chicago. He attended and graduated at Steinmetz High School in Chicago in 1941. He excelled in football and played semi-pro for two teams while still attending high school. A veteran of WWII, he was a military policeman with the rank of P.F.C., mainly stationed in India and China. In 1953 he married Marilyn Bowden and had two sons, Steve and Paul. They were divorced in 1980. In 1965 he and the family lived in Hemet, Calif., where he worked as a jack-of-all-trades, ranging from fence building, cement work and carpentry. He also worked for the RAMA corp. as a swedger, and also bowled for the corporation league. In 1972, the family moved to Kalispell, Mont. where he worked at a hardware store and worked several years at a local tree farm. In 1977, the family moved to Wickenburg where he worked at a local handyman business he called "Let George do it." He also worked for the Wickenburg School District as a custodian until his retirement. He was also a member and volunteer for St. Anthony's Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He spent the last few years living in Wendover, Utah, and his hobbies included gardening, and taking walks and just staying busy. Survivors include his wife, Dang, of Wendover; his sons, Steve of Townsend, Mont., and Paul and his wife Janna of Kalispell, Mont.; his sister Dorothy Mae Heynis of California, and many friends, nieces and nephews and many cousins. |
