James (Jim) Elbert Corbin Sr. was born at Sunset Community, Pickins County, S.C. on April 25, 1932. His parents were Milton Nickelson Corbin and Nora Levina Alexander Corbin.

As a boy raised in the mountains he developed a love for camping, hunting and fishing. He hunted with a slingshot and became proficient with it. He also became a good marksman with a gun. His father always taught him, “What you kill, you eat.”

Jim was a very good artist. In the seventh grade as a health project he drew the muscle structure of a man on the chalk board. His teacher was so impressed she left it on the board for the whole year.

He taught himself to play the guitar as a teenager. He loved country music. During his lifetime he formed many of his own bands and was a well-known entertainer in Kansas, South Carolina and Florida. His band played on a radio show in South Carolina in the mid 1960s. He was offered many opportunities to become a professional entertainer and rubbed shoulders with many well-known country musicians. Jim chose to raise his family over the ability to gain fame as a professional entertainer. His family was his top priority in his life. In his latter years he used his talents to serve the Lord by playing his guitar in church and at nursing homes.

Jim enlisted in the Army at the age of 18 and served his country for five years. He was stationed in Germany, Korea, and Hawaii in the 1950s. He served in the Corps of Industrial Engineers.

During his work career he not only made a living as a musician, he was a certified underwater welder working in the shipyards. He also worked for various large companies as a security guard.

At age 55 he had cancer. He was operated on and the cancer removed. It was an experimental type of surgery, and doctors did not expect him to live. He was sent home to die. God had other plans.

Jim was a thoughtful, loving man. He loved to tell stories of his life experiences. He served his community as a member of the Gila County Search and Rescue Team and as a member of the Globe Lions Club.

Jim went to be with the Lord on Oct. 21, 2009 following a heart attack.

Jim is survived by his wife, Marilyn Medearis Corbin; his daughters, Karen Corbin, of Saginaw, Mich., and Zerina Perkins, of Clearwater, Fla.; his son, James (Jamie) Elbert Corbin Jr., of the Phoenix area, and Jim’s ex-wife, Rose Corbin, of Globe. He has two step-daughters, Cheryl Valenzuela, of Tucson, Ariz., and Beth Ellen Johnson, of Queen Creek, Ariz. He has 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. His brother, Robert Corbin, lives in Colorado.

Visitation was held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 at Lamont Mortuary Chapel in Globe. Funeral services followed at 10 a.m. at Lamont Mortuary Chapel.
